Homeless Helping Homeless
Homeless Helping Homeless (HHH) does not give the homeless a voice, it is the voice of the homeless. Since 2001, members of the homeless community have, through HHH, advocated and organized politically for themselves. Facilitated by the Urban Ministry Center as part of the Community Works 945 project, HHH demonstrates civic concern, honesty, and genuine commitment by and on behalf of the homeless in Charlotte, NC.

HHH Leadership Retreat

Thanks to the generous gift of Angie Forde's leadership skills, the HHH leadership trip went on its first planning retreat. Davidson College Presbyterian Church graciously hosted and fed us, while we used their space to plan our goals for 2008.
We are excited to shore up some of our current clean-up efforts and political-organizing, as well as begin a new education campaign and complete our training to start a public access TV program.
HHH and H.E.L.P. Reunite!

HHH went back to its roots on Sunday, October 21st. A local organizing group, H.E.L.P. (Helping Empower Local People), assisted in HHH's beginning back in 2002. HHH enlisted their assistance once again as we strategized for a voter engagement plan. HELP was so impressed by our work that when it came time for their annual gathering, they invited HHH to present about our work on getting folks to vote. Tommy Yarborough challenged the gathering of 300+ individuals, "If we can register over 150 folks, what can you do?"
HHH is excited to continue to partner with H.E.L.P. as we work towards a more just community.
First UMC Movie Night a Success
"Movie Night." The idea was born when Jack, Michelle, and Darren, three Christians wanting to serve God in the guise of the "lease of these," attended a Homeless Helping Homeless meeting. They suggested an outdoor movie showing. HHH Member Dirk Thune suggested the film "Pay it Forward." Thursday, October 18th the dream was realized. The threat of storms moved the film inside, but the light-green walls of the soup kitchen proved a perfect backdrop for the projector.
Thanks to Beth and Jason for providing staff support. Thanks to Jack, Michelle and Darren for the idea, the equipment, and all the candy, popcorn and soda one could hope to consume. Finally, thanks for the homeless community for showing up and enjoying yourselves. We look forward to future showings.
